Impact of Campaign

Troy was born in a small town and experienced homelessness, and became the first member of his family to attend college.  Because he received an emergency grant, he is graduating this May to pursue a career in the trades.

The foundation helped me in a time of need about a month ago when my truck broke down right next to campus. A whole bunch of people I’ve never met, were willing to send me resources to help me graduate smoothly. And for that, I feel very privileged and grateful to have such generous people cheering me on in my stands.

Candice is a single mom who was incarcerated and battled addiction, but is now on the path to success as a Human Services counselor. Because she received a scholarship, she had the financial stability to focus on school. She has found her purpose in life: to help others who are struggling find a way to succeed.

To the recipients of the scholarships, keep doing what you’re doing.  Keep working hard when you are tired.  Keep believing in yourself.  To those of you aiding in our academic career, what you are doing is life changing, and I hope that every day you remember what a wonderful opportunity you have given us.

I am the first person in my family to attend college. At the age of 21, I realized that I had a problem with alcohol and that my life was not headed on the right track. I had always dreamed of becoming an R.N., but my alcoholism was getting in the way. At that time, I decided to join a recovery program and get sober. It has been a tough journey. I celebrated five years of sobriety in January 2018!

I work part-time in the emergency department at St. Mary’s Hospital and the Cardiology department at Dean and St. Mary’s under my paramedic license. Today, I am so grateful for the scholarships I received from Madison College Foundation and the opportunities I have had to learn on the job. I think all of this will help me become the wonderful nurse I was always meant to be.

Ashley Hanson

I am a graduate of the Madison College 2003 Cosmetology program. My story starts with an average day and a not so average haircut an older gentleman asked me what my dream was, and I answered to be a makeup artist. He sent me a package about an internship in New York City at The Juilliard School in wigs and makeup. I applied and was accepted, thanks in part to my training at Madison College. This led to a career as the Wig and Makeup Shop Coordinator at the Juilliard School and a lucrative side career in wig making for Saturday Night Live, Cirque du Soleil, Broadway, and movies. You just never know who’s going to sit in your chair!

Our pleasure in providing scholarship support to Madison College students is enhanced by our opportunity to get to know the scholarship recipients and interact with them and provide our thoughts on the issues they confront as they move through life. Many of these students have not had the good fortune to have family/friends to assist them in making decisions and setting priorities. No, we don’t have all the answers to the issues they confront, but our life experience and circle of friends can and have been a resource to those students as they set priorities, solve problems, respond to crisis and move toward full economic independence. These young men and women have become part of our family.

Roberto Sanchez

Professor Sanchez knew the challenges of being a first-generation college student from his own experience. He created an endowed scholarship while he was still alive designed to create a pathway for bi-lingual, first generation Latino students in the Madison area. When Dr. Sanchez passed away, he left Madison College Foundation a legacy gift, which significantly increased the number of students scholarship recipients, thus impacting even more lives.

“In a sense Roberto was a dreamer too. He saved every dollar and wanted to support all Latino students.”
