The Ed Hellegers Memorial Scholarship
Edward Hellegers was born in Passaic, New Jersey in 1938. He attended Montclair State College, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics with a business minor, followed by earning his master’s degree in Economic History from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Ed taught junior high and high school in New Jersey while he continued his studies through summer programs at Bucknell University, NYU, Tufts University and Princeton. In 1968, Ed moved to Wisconsin to work on his doctorate at UW-Madison. In 1972, Ed became an instructor at Madison Area Technical College, now Madison College, where he spent the next 30 years teaching Economics and Sociology. Ed understood the impact that hard work and a quality education had on his own life and relished the opportunity to educate future generations, watching his former students with enjoyment and pride as they began their careers after college. Ed also believed in community engagement and involvement, actively participating with the Wisconsin Federation of Teachers (AFT-Wisconsin) for many years, served on the City of Madison Planning Commission, and coached and refereed youth soccer. Ed passed away of natural causes in 2024. He wished for memorial contributions to be directed to the Madison College Foundation, helping to provide scholarships for students. This legacy reflects his belief in the potential of future generations and the lasting impact of education, ensuring that his support for aspiring students continues beyond his passing.
