Earlier this year, Madison College celebrated the opening of the new $10 million Early Learning Campus (ELC) at Goodman South, a 20,324-square-foot facility, formerly a city fire station, that expands childcare access and strengthens early childhood education training. The ELC addresses a critical shortage of childcare options in Madison’s Southside.
Since 1989, the college has provided childcare for student-parents, who make up roughly 40 percent of its student population — nearly double the national average for community colleges. The ELC extends that support to include drop-in, evening, and weekend care, fitting the real-world schedules of students balancing classes, work, and family.
The building was shaped by the students it serves. Their feedback led to family study spaces, welcoming lactation rooms, changing tables in men’s restrooms, and extended hours.
The ELC could not have happened without the number of donors who share our passion for student success and recognize that access to childcare can be a barrier.”
